What to Expect at Your Appointment for STD or STI Testing

For many people it can be a very scary experience to go to an appointment to be tested for various types of sexually transmitted diseases, and this is especially true for a patient that has never undergone this type of experience before. Knowing what to expect is half the battle. Once you arrive at your appointment you will be expected to fill out paperwork that covers general information, and it will also include questions regarding your sexual health and history. Once you are called back to meet with the doctor, he will discuss any areas of your medical and sexual history that may need to be elaborated on. The actual testing will generally consist of blood-work that will need to be done, a urine sample will be collected, visual testing will be done, and physical testing that consists of cells of the body being gathered by using a swab test of the genital area.

These cells may be collected from the patient’s anus, the urethra of the penis, or the vagina. Although you may receive some of the results that very day, there is generally a wait of approximately 3 days for blood and cell testing, sometimes even longer.
